Flood Map Modernization
The goal of FEMA's Map Modernization Plan is to upgrade the 100,000 panel flood map inventory by:
- Developing up-to-date flood hazard data for all floodprone areas nationwide to support sound floodplain management and prudent flood insurance decisions
- Improve the digital formatting of maps and data in order to increase their efficiency and precision
- Fully integrate FEMA's community and state partners into the mapping process to build on local knowledge and efforts
- Improve and speed-up the creation and updating of maps
- Improve customer service by expediting flood map orders
- Raise public awareness of flood hazards
FEMA Timeline
- Over the five-year initiative more than 20,000 communities will update and digitize their flood information
- This information will be used not just for flood insurance, but also in the identification of populations and areas at risk for flooding, land slides, erosion and deforestation
- The new digital data will allow future updates to be carried out more easily and be compatible with more technological modelling software that will allow for more precise preparation planning for future floods
