Overall
Flooding is Kentucky’s most costly natural disaster — both in terms of financial loss and anguish suffered by victims.
These costs can be substantially reduced or eliminated through effective pre-disaster planning and mitigation actions.
DFIRMS and programs like the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides pre-disaster planning and hazard mitigation tools as well as post-disaster financial relief for participating communities. NFIP communities are eligible for federally subsidized flood insurance, federal grants and increased assistance during times of disaster.
